Normal City Manager Pamela Reece announced today that Ryan Otto will become the new Town Engineer, effective July 30. Otto assumes the duties of Gene Brown, who retired on at the end of May after a 33-year career with the Town.

Otto brings plenty of experience to the position. Starting in 2005, he worked as Civil Engineer, until getting promoted to Assistant City Engineer in November 2015. Additionally, Otto holds a bachelor's degree in agricultural engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Reece is confident that Brown's qualifications will allow him to make an immediate impact.

"We were immediately impressed, not only with his knowledge and expertise, but with his demonstrated ability to lead a team to accomplish challenging goals in a timely and cost-effective manner," Reece said in a statement.  "He will bring a new dynamic to our leadership team and can step right into a summer construction and road improvement season that is already underway."

The engineering department is expected to maintain eight employees. Engineering is responsible for coordinating all engineering functions, including plan review, project management, and traffic control management, among other duties.

Otto will be paid $118,517 per year.
