Going Local: Flingers Pizza Pub
“My favorite menu item is the Windy City Fire pizza,” said Pat Fruin, owner of Flingers Pizza Pub in Bloomington. “I eat pizza almost every day,” continued Pat.
Flingers opened in 2003 in downtown Bloomington under previous ownership. Pat purchased the business in December 2006. “I graduated from the University of Iowa and originally wanted to open up a restaurant in Iowa City, but this opportunity became available and I grabbed it,” said Pat. Today Flingers at 1503 E. Vernon Ave. in Bloomington has 42 employees and has about 4,000 sq. ft. of space.
“Our busiest time of the year is March to May and September to November,” said Pat. Flingers started to emphasize craft beers in 2009 and today they have 28 craft beers on tap. It’s no surprise that Friday and Saturday are the most active days of the week.
Flingers is unique in that they were forced to relocate after they “lost their lease” in downtown Bloomington in 2013. After a longer than normal search and 14 months to refurbish the Vernon Ave. location, Flingers re-opened in September 2015. “18 of our 20 employees came back to work at the new location!” said Pat.
Flingers has seating for 135, which includes the new 30-seat outside patio that opened earlier this month. “About 35% of our business is by delivery,” said Pat. “Our lunch pricing is pretty aggressive, so we have good lunch traffic,” continued Pat.
“The most challenging thing for me is to delegate work to my employees,” said Pat. Flingers has two primary managers and five secondary managers that Pat oversees.
The idea for the name “Flingers” came from the 1999 film Office Space – a restaurant in the movie had the same name.
Flingers opens daily at 11 am. It closes at 10 pm on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday; 11 pm on Wednesday and Thursday and 12 am on Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit their website at www.flingerspizzapub.com
