Going Local: Beck's Family Florist
Gaye Beck once received a bouquet of balloons while working for Illinois Power at the Clinton Power Plant.
“I said to myself that I wanted to go into that business,” said Gaye. “I was working in data entry and accounting, so I had no previous retail experience.”
She opened Balloons & More in Downtown Bloomington in March 1984. A florist business was soon added, and the name became Beck’s Family Florist a few years later.
“Valentine’s Day is our busiest time followed by Mother’s Day and then Christmas,” said Gaye. The business delivers flowers for many funerals and also does weddings.
The business is currently located at 312 N. Main Street in Bloomington. Gaye’s son Tim is one of the business’ four employees. Gaye also owns the building, which includes the adjacent space to the north and the above two floors.
After paying off her mortgage in 2014, Gaye decided it was time to renovate the top floors and now has six attractive loft apartments, which she calls the Phoenix Lofts. The renovation was completed in the summer of 2016.
“Making people smile” is Gaye’s favorite part of her business.
Gaye is also very active in the Downtown Bloomington Rotary Club and lives in the Dimmitt’s Grove Neighborhood in Bloomington, where she loves to be outside and work in her garden.
For most of her 35 years plus in the business, Gaye Beck has been the only florist in Downtown Bloomington. She says today’s floral business involves being active on the internet, and she also works with 1-800-Flowers.com.
Beck’s Family Florist is open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday – Friday, and 9:00 am - 12:00 pm on Saturdays. Beck’s Family Florist can also be found online at becksfamilyflorist.com.
