Going Local: Masters Bros.

Masters Bros co-owner Rick Masters says their brightly colored green and white fleet helps them market their business.

Masters Bros co-owner Rick Masters says their brightly colored green and white fleet helps them market their business.

In 2006, Nathan and Rick Masters started Masters Bros., an electrical and heating & cooling (HVAC) contractor business. Today the business employs a staff of 40 people. “About 70% of our business is electrical and 30% is HVAC,” Rick said.

Another brother, Jeremy, joined the business in 2009. Rick is in-charge of the electrical business; Nathan manages the HVAC side; and Jeremy does some electrical and administrative work. All three brothers are equal partners in the business.

“We wanted to start something ourselves,” said Rick. “For the first five years we operated out of my house. Then we completed our building at 4109 Wicker Road [in Bloomington] in 2011.” Their current building has approximately 5,000 sq. ft.

The three brothers worked at the family business, Wm. Masters, Inc. before starting their own business. One main difference is that Wm. Masters, Inc. is unionized and Masters Bros. is non-union. Their father and two brothers continue to own and operate Wm. Masters, Inc.

The family says they don’t see each other as competitors, however. “Almost half of our current construction work is in Champaign,” said Rick, adding that new student apartments have been very active in Champaign-Urbana.

Masters Bros. uses a unique apprentice program to train new technicians. The Department of Labor oversees these types of programs and Rick says they are needed, especially in non-union fields. “Finding skilled labor is the most challenging part of our business,” said Rick.

Many people comment on the appearance of the Masters Bros. green and white vehicle fleet.  “We pay close attention to how our vehicles look,” Rick said. Outside of the internet, the visual advertising of the company’s vehicle fleet is how Masters Bros. markets its business.
