Early Reports: H&M Coming to Eastland Mall
Sweden-based, multinational clothing retailer H&M Group will add an H&M brand store at Bloomington’s Eastland Mall in the former JCPenney space, GLT reported Wednesday evening.
H&M U.S. Media Relations did not confirm the plans, saying in email correspondence with AdaptBN Thursday that it did not have “any news to share.” Emails and phone calls to spokespersons for Eastland owner CBL Properties were not immediately returned. City of Bloomington Building Official Bob Coombs said his office did not have any plans submitted for that space.
Drawings obtained by GLT from an unnamed source show H&M occupying the south half of the space, with Planet Fitness and additional restrooms planned for the rest of the space. JCPenney closed its Eastland location in October due to declining traffic and sales.
GLT also reported Canadian-based project management firm Sajo will begin construction in February, wrapping up in late spring.
H&M Group reported lower than anticipated sales in its fourth quarter, down 4% from 2016, pointing to reduced foot traffic in physical H&M stores.
The brand has over 500 locations across the United States, including 20 stores in Illinois from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs to Peoria and Springfield. H&M Group noted it would continue with plans to optimize its portfolio of H&M stores, with more closures and fewer openings.
