Robert Mahrt will begin his role as the Interim Community Development Director for the City of Bloomington on December 21.

According to Interim City Manager Steve Rasmussen, “(Mahrt) has a long background in community development.” Rasmussen added that Mahrt’s experience in city planning and code enforcement also influenced the selection board’s decision. One other candidate also interviewed for the position.

Mahrt served as Interim City Administrator of Lincoln, Illinois from September 11 until his contract with the city ended on December 15, said Lincoln City Clerk Peggy Bateman. He also served as City Administrator of Monticello and Aledo and as Community Development Director of Mahomet and Macomb.

As director of the Community Development Department, Rasmussen said Mahrt will oversee several divisions, including code inspections, building safety, city planning, grants and economic development, and the newly formed Downtown Development Division.

Rasmussen said the City also hired two Downtown Bloomington Association staff members to create the Downtown Development Division: former Downtown Bloomington Association Executive Director Tricia Stiller who will serve as director of the DD Division, and Farmer's Market coordinator Catherine Dunlap who will serve as City Liaison to the DBA.

Mahrt will assume the position previously filled by Tom Dabareiner, who left at the end of October. Marht’s annual salary will be $101,874.
